Former NFL player Sergio Brown is pleading not guilty to murdering his mother and hiding her body. Brown, 35, entered the plea on Wednesday and is expected back in court next month, according to the Cook County (Illinois) State’s Attorney’s Office.

Brown’s mother, Myrtle, was found dead in a creek near her home in Maywood, Illinois in September. She was 73. Initially reported as missing, Brown was later found to be alive and in Mexico. He posted videos on social media claiming that the FBI killed his mother and kidnapped him, referring to her death as “fake news.”

Prosecutors revealed that Brown was using his mother’s credit card in Mexico in the days following her death. He was eventually brought back to the United States and arrested in October. Currently, Brown is being held in prison without bail, facing charges of first-degree murder and concealing a body.

During his NFL career, Brown played six seasons with the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Buffalo Bills as a safety. He last appeared in a game in 2016. Undrafted out of Notre Dame, Brown played in 94 games, recording one interception, four fumble recoveries, 2.5 sacks, and 144 tackles.

The case has garnered significant media attention due to Brown’s NFL background and the shocking nature of the charges. As the legal proceedings continue, more details are expected to emerge regarding the circumstances surrounding Myrtle Brown’s tragic death.
