Does Trump’s Dictator Comment Help Biden’s Reelection Odds?

A potential rematch of the 2020 presidential election could see voters choose between Joe Biden and Donald Trump in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. While election polls show a potential close race, recent comments from Trump could help push Biden’s campaign ahead.

Undecided voters and voters in swing states could help decide the 2024 election, and Biden has ramped up his advertising spending to try and gain an edge. Recent comments from Trump will likely be part of Biden’s newest attacks against the former president to show that Trump should not return to the White House.

During a recent event with Sean Hannity, Trump answered questions about rumors of abusing power or seeking revenge on those who have spoken out against him if he’s able to win the 2024 presidential election. Trump said he would only be a dictator on “day one” if he’s re-elected.

Biden’s campaign is now working to use Trump’s comments against him as it could show that the former president is a threat to democracy, according to Politico. “It’s coming back full circle – that in the president’s mind, this is the moral authority of the race. This is an existential threat,” said Celinda Lake, a Democratic pollster for Biden’s campaign in 2020. “This is the reason he ran initially, and the reason he’s running again.”

Another source told Politico that Biden believed “it was his duty” to move America past Trump. “He had hoped 2020 would have done it but it didn’t. So he has to do it again,” the source said.

The comments from Trump come as he could have control of at least one of the two chambers of Congress and could have a conservative-leaning Supreme Court. A return to the White House could see Trump able to push through more of the ideologies and items he has promised over the years.

Biden’s campaign and leading Democrats have been mixed about whether the president should focus more on Trump or election issues in the tightly contested race. Biden emphasized making the 2024 presidential election about a battle for democracy, a campaign item that helped him win the 2020 presidential election.

In the 2020 election, Biden said the race was “a battle for the soul of the nation” and rallied against the threat from Trump and MAGA Republicans on the country. On Tuesday, Biden said Trump was trying to “Destroy American democracy.” “If Trump wasn’t running, I’m not sure I’d be running. But we cannot let him win,” Biden said.

The fierce battle between Biden and Trump still has almost a year left until Americans take to the polls to pick a winner. Expect the dictator comments from Trump to receive heavy focus from Biden for months to come and they could find their way into television advertisements in the future.
